Amy Jean Porter

Monday, January 5 at Finesilver Gallery, San Antonio

Visual art > Exhibits

Amy Jean Porter, a Connecticut-based artist of tremendous commitment, has apparently drawn more than 1,200 species of animals for her ongoing project “All Species, All the Time.” Her primate-heavy drawing show, entitled Freaked Out Monkeys in the Trees, is on display at Finesilver until January 10. Porter’s drawings have been published in Cabinet, Flaunt, and McSweeney’s and, based solely on the Finesilver website, look funny … In a good way. Monkeys, monkeys, monkeys, in vivid colors not ordinarily found in nature, often perched precariously atop spindly flowers, elsewhere mired in suburbia. Her statement reads, in part, “ … the monkeys are freaked-out stand-ins for humans and express some of the anxiety felt at the core of the American life, and escapist fantasies for simpler, less convenient times.” Gallery is open by appointment only, possibly because these monkeys have day jobs. 816 Camaron, No. 1.05, (210) 354-3333.
