column: ARIES (March 21-April 19): It’s a great privilege to live in a free country. You’re fortunate if you have the opportunity to pursue your dreams without having to ward off government interference or corporate brainwashing or religious fanaticism. But that’s only partly useful if you have not yet won the most important struggle for liberation, which is the freedom from your own unconscious habits and conditioned responses. Becoming an independent agent who’s not an unwitting slave to his or her pa ... [MORE]

Clothes-Minded: New Year’s Eve is not my favorite night of the year. Which is unusual, since the occasion involves two things I generally like (Champagne and dressing up) and lacks the major stressors of the rest of the holiday season (buying gifts, family). But inevitably, by the time New Year’s Eve rolls around, I’m tired, cranky and distracted — the perfect setup for a party disaster. Not just unsavory hookups and lost car keys, but the kinds of clothes-mindeded calamities that can shut an evening down. I’ll ... [MORE]

¡Ask a Mexican!: Special “GUSTAVO’S ON HOLIDAY” BEST OF THE MEX EDITION Published on February 01, 2007 Dear Mexican: How do Mexicans get such ridiculous nicknames from seemingly normal names? For instance, José becomes Chepe, Eduardo is Lalo, Gabriel becomes Gabi, and Guillermo devolves into Memo. — It’s Marcela, Not Chela I want to know why Mexicans have such incongruous nicknames. In English, people have nicknames that have some relation to their given names — for example, Kenny is the nic ... [MORE]

Dear Uncle Mat : I’ve been reading your column for quite some time now, and it surprises me that I’m actually writing to you. I’m usually the one who others come to for advice. I’ve been seeing this guy since March. Ups and downs like any relationship I suppose. He has very low self-esteem, and he was previously in counseling for this. Since we’ve been together I’ve really changed my life to suit him. I quit smoking (not at his request) and hindered my social life. He’s not distrustful of me, but rather he ... [MORE]
column: ARIES (March 21-April 19): Most people spend their entire lives immersed in three modes of awareness: waking, sleeping, and dreaming. But there are many other modes that have been explored down through the ages by the pioneers of consciousness. Some of them aren’t very interesting to me — like those sought out by people who use cocaine or methamphetamines, for instance — while others are states I aspire to inhabit, like lucid dreaming, deep meditation, and a visceral perception of the fact that ... Cuco Peeps : Every once in a while, right before the December holidays, I come across a copy of O. Henry’s remarkable story “The Gift of the Magi.” It’s the tale of a man and a woman who do not have any money to buy Christmas presents, so they sell the two possessions that mean the most to them in order to buy one another something beautiful. She buys him a fob for his prized watch; he buys her combs for her gleaming wealth of hair. Neither party is aware of what the other has given up in order to offer ... [MORE]

Dear Uncle Mat : I am a 28-year-old, college-educated black male. I live on the northwest side of San Antonio and come from a middle-class family. About five months ago I met a 27-year-old Hispanic female from the East Side of San Antonio, born and raised. We come from different backgrounds to say the least. Over this period of time together I have fallen deeply in love with her. This is the first time I have opened up to anyone like I have with her. In the last month and a half my life and everything I have com ... [MORE]
¡Ask a Mexican!: SPECIAL YEAR-END EDITION Dear Mexican: I was driving home on old King Road in San Jose, where a bunch of Mexicans live, and I noticed that almost every house has their Christmas lights still hanging from the rafters, and reindeer and Santa Claus decorations weathered by the hot sun on the roofs. It’s the middle of May, ¿qué onda? I took it one step further, ’cuz I figure I have to have another source for my research. I went down on White Road (but only browns live there!). Same thing — X-m ... [MORE]

Clothes-Minded: I’ve written a lot of columns about cleaning out your closet. I’m a ruthless editor with high standards and no remorse. If it doesn’t fit, is out of style, looks better on the hanger, or doesn’t work with the rest of your wardrobe, toss it, I always say. I’ve given away clothes that still have the tags on them. The Salvation Army has more of my clothes than I do. But times have changed, and so has my tune. The dirty secret behind the relentless winnowing of my wardrobe was having an excuse ... [MORE]

Dear Uncle Mat : I’ve got a great job lined up (military), I recently graduated from high school, have my own car, and I’m very self-sufficient. My whole life is ready for liftoff, but I can’t help but feel depressed. I have a girlfriend of one year (we had our anniversary yesterday), my high-school sweetheart. For the last couple of months, as the day approaches that I’ll have to leave for the military, whenever I’m not with her I can’t help but think that our relationship might not pan out. We started out a gr ... [MORE]
column: ARIES (March 21-April 19): What I foresee for you in 2009 is an upgrade in your approach to creating and maintaining your alliances. I envision you having dramatically enhanced intuition about how to connect with people in satisfying and interesting ways. I picture you being able to push beyond your habit-bound ways of conducting your relationships, ensuring that you’ll be entertained and moved by them more than ever before. If I could give you a symbolic holiday gift to inspire you in this work ... [MORE]

¡Ask a Mexican!: SPECIAL NAVIDAD SHOPPING GUIDE EDITION Dear Readers: A couple of columnas ago, I published a short list of my favorite books regarding Mexicans and Mexican-Americans and urged ustedes to submit better choices so that gabachos can have a Christmas shopping list for their favorite Mexicans, or to understand nosotros better. Muchos responded, and below is a list of the most-recommended tomes, along with my brief descriptions. But before empezamos, let’s start with a surprise — the only autho ... [MORE]
